Hihi, sometimes I really thinking about getting myself this kind t-shirt.
Normally it's happens when i trying to shoot something at Tian'An Men square. And meet all the people, who, probably, come up there to practice their english with Laowai fellows. I feel somehow that they think extremely not busy right now, or in their vocabulary does not exist words "I am working, sorry. Please let me do my stuff"..... grrrr
So, in case you will decide to take some pictures on the Very Touristic place in Beijing, be prepared that at least 10 people will ask you:
1)where are you from?
2)How long you are in china?
3) how old are you?
4)do you have kids? (Shame on you if you have not) Because then it will be
4)Why you dont have kids?
5) Why you are not married?
6) What is your job?
7) Do you have a big salary? etc ect etc
LOL which is might be funny in case you dont live in Beijing as I do.
Update: 20/06/2012
One my friend after publication asked me: Erina whats a problem just to speak with them?
Answer: It's cool when you are "turisto" and chatting with friendly locals is part of your entertainment programm.
Other thing, if you living in Beijing. Of course, if you are not in the "tourist place" then this will not happens (i am 95% sure), but i live on Wangfujing area (see attached map). Which is fine and very beautiful itself, if don't count the part that i have to pass the "touristic places" every time i go somewhere.
So i could have "session of speaking with locals" 3-4 times per day.
Worst thing, i think, is that they not coming up to you (as we normally doing in Europe and everywhere), but starting to shout at you from the back.
It's really funny, because if you are walking, and with your eyes see, that nobody intend to speak with you, but then you hear that someone yelling right behind you: Helooowww!!! (yep, hello is exactly Hellloooowww) I am not turnedmy head yet and i hear that he, of she running behind me and continues Where are you from? You look as from ... whatever (btw i dont pay attention ) How long are you in Beijing?.
Then (if it was woman) she will probably try to grab you to get your attention. (Lucky me, men don't do grabbing LOL)
Don't you feel strange that someone is grabbing your hand if you clearly shows that not in mood to speak? O_o
After being in Beijing first month i recognise that i have strong "hitting reflex" if someone touching me. I saying it not because i am angry at those people. Most probably they are harmless, but same time limitless in their intention to speak with you. Its just curiousity.
But, i felt it few times, that if someone in crowd grabbing you, i have reflex to hit this person. Thats what we bring with us from our culture.
But then, i heard from chinese people, they are really surprised that foreigners are "so unfriendly".
Here, i think is our mentality's difference. If we growing up with idea that everyone have to have own space. Here, you must be prepared, that you will have about 20 other people standing on "your own space" together with you
Again... Please note. That above i don't mention people outside touristic areas. Be sure if you are walking in hutongs or in usual living area people will, definitely pay attention to you, but it won't go more than just starring. It's because you look uncommon.
